As we go through some difficult times in our country, it’s still good to know we have friends we can count on and the kindness of others to make the hard times bearable. Gifts come to us from unlikely places when least expected. Best of all, we have each other here at Birdie’s Nest….
Tell us your favorite Valentine’s Day story…….open thread

A friend of mine was working at a florist shop, taking phone orders. She said the only day busier than Valentine’s Day was Mothers’ Day. Almost all the calls/orders were from men sending flowers to women (not their Moms). Unfortunatley, an awful lot of the cards began with the words, “I’m sorry”.
She said in all her years working there, she had never received an order from a woman to a man, with a card that said, “I’m sorry.”
I passed by a florist shop in a nearby town once, with a funny message on its marquee saying simply “How mad is she?”
LOL
Back in the day, with three kids, money was tight and luxuries were a dream, but a sincere “you are my valentine” and a kiss were enough.
Before the world got nutty with PC issues, I remember the fun of Valentine’s day in school.
We made our Valentine shoeboxes with glue and construction paper and gave everyone in class a valentine (that Mother bought). Some parents made heart shaped cookies.
It was simple fun that most of us remember fondly.
Those Valentine boxes were the greatest fun, weren’t they? I am many, many years past elementary school
but every time I go to throw away the inner carboard tube from the paper towels or toilet paper, I always think what a great adornment that would make for a Valentine’s Day castle!!
It was great fun and my mother and I got to make one for my homeroom.
I remember how carefully I chose each card for my classmates. In a small way I wanted each one to reflect the person getting it. Took me forever to sign the cards. Seems silly, but at the time it was so important.
Oh! I had completely forgotten those Valentine shoeboxes. I was a little later than you, I believe…we also used crepe paper and paper doilies. I just went to Ebay to see…yup, there are “vintage valentines”…just like the ones I remember. Sigh…my memories are now vintage.
Thanks for the smile on my face…
The Valentine shoe boxes were simply the best. I worked and worked on mine and carefully chose the cards for each classmate.
BUTT, my most memorable Valentine box was years later when one of my nephews was in the first grade. I was at his house and he confessed to his mom that he hadn’t made his Valentine box. Welllllllllllll, since I had extraordinary talents in this particular art form
, I went to work. We covered and made little danglies and lots of hearts – in several sizes – and to my delight, we got third place! Third, I’m thinking? The first place kid had a Snoopy mailbox that his dad had made and the second place kid had something similar that his dad had worked on for days as well. So, I was very happy – mostly because of how happy my little nephew was.
Great story….special
When our youngest was 7, he brought home a slip from school asking to fill it out if we were going to bake for their party and if we would attend. I signed the slip, did my thing with cards and candy and cookies for the class and, showed up at 1:00 to help the teacher with the party and the kids. As I entered the door, my baby met me with a rose and escorted me to a table set with small plates and decorated for Valentine’s Day.
All the moms and grammas were treated to an afternon tea by the children. LOL
That was the best day ever!
What a lovely memory…and a big high-five for the teacher who planned it!!
Yes, indeed …
Before I became disabled I used to buy, every year, small heart-shaped boxes of candy for my seven young cousins. I made each of them a personal valentine’s day collage. It was my way of giving them a shared tradition and letting them know that I loved them.
Love the homemade stuff. Am doing more of it myself. For some reason, I had forgotten how good it feels.
O/T….now I get why 26 states are up in arms over Obamacare…

“See no sleazy, hear no sleazy”….No, the campaign did not know about the crooks they took money from…absolutely not…no way….no how

[...]◦The budget proposes a number of tax increases, including the “Buffett Rule,” but fails to control spending, which makes the revenue increases almost totally pointless. It does, however, leave the possibility open that the nation could win at Powerball, or recoup their economic failings with good, old-fashioned inflation.
◦The spending cuts are actually deficit cuts, which means they merely decrease the amount by which entitlement spending increases every year. So they’re bullsh*t. The good news is that even the Obama Administration fully recognizes that the 2012 and 2013 deficit projections are horrible, which is comforting considering that they’re creating them.
◦The “spending cuts” also include “savings” from winding down the wars in the Middle East. Except we borrowed to pay for those wars, so basically we’re not actually saving anything just borrowing more. This is how hoarders happen.
◦But that’s not entirely surprising because whoever drafted this budget clearly took economics in a public school.[...]
At least there is the humor factor….

I’m expecting another quantative easing by the Feds and inflation will finish us off for sure.
Our money will be worth next to nothing by the time they’re finished with us.
Our politicians (all of them) only know how to SPEND, SPEND money. it’s like they don’t know how to do anything else. Or, make stupid laws.
I wish they’d all go home and stay there for 6 months.
YEP, it would be a boon to us if they were only in DC part time…
[...]Thank you for eating your vegetables,” she told airmen at a mess hall in Little Rock, Ark., as several stared guiltily into half-eaten plates of broccoli. “We need you strong.”
And sitting down with parents for dinner at an Olive Garden restaurant in Fort Worth, she exclaimed, “I hope you’re hungry; I’m starving,” and then passed around a salad bowl.
Serving up leafy greens is easier, of course, than slicing $1 trillion out of the federal budget. But Mrs. Obama has managed to make her “eat your peas” message painless and even occasionally joyful, hamming it up through a three-day, four-state tour to mark the second anniversary of her childhood anti-obesity campaign, “Let’s Move!” The trip is a timely reminder of why the Obama campaign views her as such a potent weapon.[...]
[...]Landler carefully calibrated his story to show Michelle Obama both as a committed political figure, down-to-earth role model, and a mother who always makes time for her kids[...]

ACK. And also MOO.
ditto.
Good grief…it is important to thank our warriors for eating their veggies? Why not thank them for keeping your big rear safe!! Ugh! She makes me want to scream…
I’m pretty sure that broccoli and bok choy make for extraordinary strength……NOT! Protein, that’s what warriors need……….as in meat from cows!
Every comment I read is negative. Dittos everyone!
Well, at least they were honest in saying she was hamming it up.
This is just the most precious Valentine Day story ever – Justin Bieber “marries” a little girl who has been stricken with cancer since she was a baby.

Kindness….makes the whole world a better place….kudos to Justin for giving her that dream come true.
What a hypocrite….it’s his fault the gas prices are up….who the hell is he kidding
Well, tell poor Tony that gas soon will be more…you think $4 a gallon is bad…just wait, it’ll be $5 pretty soon. I want to blow a gasket listening to him…”as our economy strengthens, global demand increases”…WTF? Actually our demand is down 5%…When is he going to blame it on the Chinese…
I’m sorry…answering my own post. I’m experiencing thunder snow…almost 2 inches and lightning and thunder. Annie is a little nervous. I’m in complete agreement…it’s his own darn fault. As he opens his lying mouth, blame everyone else…the world demand, the Chinese, Bush…blah, blah.
Off to see who wins Best of Show at Westminister…the dalmation?
One of the things I read abnout Sarah Palin’s speech last week is how upbeat she was, telling Americans they’re good people, hard-working, it’s a wonderful country. The writer pointed out the incessant mewling and whining of the o.
Those two grifters are always disappointed in us. Never themselves.
Koffler just posted the skinny on the O’s Valentine Dinner estimated at $300.
